Sa Kaeo mines swept but Cambodians stay
Thai military forces have now fully cleared landmines across 38,256 square metres in Ban Nong Ya Kaeo in Sa Kaeo after the passing of a deadline set for encroachers to leave, despite objections from Cambodia.
The Sa Kaeo governor admitted that Thai authorities have yet to proceed with evicting encroachers in the areas of Ban Nong Chan and Ban Nong Ya Kaeo in Khok Sung district, following the Oct 10 deadline set by the province.
According to the First Army Region, about 200 Thai nationals, including local traders and members of the press, gathered in a symbolic demonstration to assert Thai sovereignty over the Ban Nong Chan area. On the opposite side, Cambodian citizens were also seen gathering in support.
At the same time, Thai forces have been deployed to maintain internal security and closely monitor developments in the area.
