DSI accepts crypto case as ministry ditches MOU

The Department of Special Investigation (DSI) has accepted an iris-scanning cryptocurrency case at the same time as the Digital Economy and Society (DE) Ministry has cancelled a memorandum of understanding (MOU), suspected to be connected to a global money laundering network, with a Singapore firm.
The DSI has taken up as a special case allegations against a company operating iris-scanning in exchange for cryptocurrency under the Worldcoin project, citing violations of the Computer Crime Act.
The move follows revelations by DE Minister Chaichanok Chidchob, who ordered the cancellation of the MOU signed on March 27 last year between the ministry and Prime Opportunity Fund VCC Singapore.
The MOU had outlined plans to establish a Thailand International Digital and Financial Centre (TIDC) but was later found to be linked to suspected global digital money laundering operations.
The MOU was drafted and signed within just three days (March 25-27, 2024), it was reported.
