The Senate's decision to punish Senator Nantana Nantavaropas for a “serious ethical violation” is doing more harm than good to the Upper House’s image, as it exposes the double standards in Thailand's political landscape.

Sen Nantana lost her cool last month after she was not chosen to sit on the Upper House's committee on political development. Upon learning that she had lost out to Daeng Kongma, a senator from Amnat Charoen who hails from a humble background, the former dean of the Political Communication College at Krirk University in Bangkok immediately took aim at her successor, referring to Sen Daeng as a “pork vendor”.
The remark led to a defamation complaint against the outspoken senator.
On Tuesday, the majority of senators voted to find Sen Nantana guilty of committing a “serious ethical violation”, with 130 voting in favour of finding her in the wrong, 26 against, and 11 abstaining from the vote. The vote was initiated by the Upper House's ethics committee, which is chaired by Deputy House Speaker Gen Kriengkrai Srirak.
