Crossings to remain closed

The Thai armed forces have confirmed that permanent border crossings and trade facilitation points with Cambodia will remain closed due to ongoing security threats to national sovereignty.

They have also agreed on the need to construct border fences in areas where both sides have reached an agreement on demarcation, while disputed areas will be patrolled and monitored with tactical paths to be built along the border.

Guidelines for responding to violations of Thai sovereignty have also been reviewed with international rules of engagement (ROE) to be followed in response to hostile acts or hostile intentions, including spying or preparations for attacks.

These ROE measures have already been presented to the defence minister.

The issues were discussed during a meeting yesterday of military leaders headed by the Chief of Defence Forces, Gen Songwit Noonpakdee.
