Call for bonfire of digital rules to assist private tech sector

Focus on removing regulatory hurdles and strengthening local platforms, writes Suchit Leesa-nguansuk

Political parties should step back from the concept of the government building and operating digital platforms by themselves to maintain digital sovereignty, instead focusing on clearing regulatory roadblocks and providing incentives to local platforms to increase their competitiveness, say tech leaders.

These leaders noted that true digital sovereignty depends on strengthening upstream and midstream segments of the artificial intelligence (AI) supply chain and the country having its own strong cybersecurity.

BUILD INFRASTRUCTURE

Yod Chinsupakul, chief executive of Line Man Wongnai, said several political parties believe Thailand should emphasise digital sovereignty. He agrees that Thailand should have its own local platforms and technology rather than relying solely on foreign providers.

However, the government should not build or operate its own digital platforms, said Mr Yod.

The government should act as a “field-maker” by creating a supportive environment where Thai entrepreneurs can compete, he said.

When the state attempts to develop its own apps or platforms, the chances of success are proven to be quite low, said Mr Yod. This is because building and running a competitive platform is not the government's core competency.

“The government should focus on building the infrastructure, setting clear rules, and unlocking legal obstacles that hinder Thai companies from competing with foreign tech giants,” he said.

Private companies are better suited to building platforms because they possess the talent, motivation and agility required to succeed, said Mr Yod.
