Bill-blocking Senate bad for change

The charter is unlikely to be amended under the government despite the political will to do so expressed by MPs as they hope to usher in change, according to Somkid Chueakong, deputy secretary-general to the prime minister.

Mr Somkid Chuekong has expressed concern over the slim prospects for amending the 2017 Constitution, citing resistance from the Senate as the main obstacle.

He said that despite a shared desire among MPs across all parties to revise the constitution created under the previous coup-engineered administration, the process remains stalled due to the requirement that one-third of the Senate must support any proposed amendment. This condition, he said, has blocked progress.
