Leader falls on his sword to ‘prevent distraction’
South Ayrshire leader Martin Dowey was told he no longer had the backing of key allies as he was forced to step aside this week.
The embattled Tory council chief made the call to fall on his sword after senior figures in his administration wavered in their support.
It followed the weekend revelation of a tape recording - from his own office in 2023 - appearing to expose him making promises to help “pals” win lucrative council contracts.
Cllr Dowey has robustly denied any wrongdoing and vowed to clear his name.
Police have confirmed they are looking into the claims, which led to a day of pressure on Monday with opposition politicians demanding Dowey step down.
The Post understands he had planned to continue in his role, but a day of high drama at County Buildings saw senior administration figures express doubts over their support.
Independent member, Bob Shields, and the council's current depute leader, Tory Bob Pollock, are believed to have withdrawn their backing for the regime.
