The African snuffbox tree!
Who has ever heard of such a thing? But there it was, identified and signposted, when I leaned in to read the name of a very strange-looking tree I noticed for the first time this month on one of my regular walks through the University of Auckland campus. It grows outside the biology building, close to Old Government House, that splendid wooden two-storey pile where the newly crowned Queen Elizabeth broadcast her Christmas message in 1953. “My loyal subjects...” The aroma of colonialism still wafts strong and steady in the campus grounds. It’s a kind of arboretum, with more than 400 trees taken from around the world.
