IT was the worst of times; it was the best of times. If the early 1980s saw the rise of fanaticism, caste massacres and other atrocities, it also saw the one event that united the country in joy and pride. The 1982 Asian Games in Delhi were organised to perfection in just over two years—18 new venues were constructed or renovated, including the Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium and the Indraprastha Stadium, at that time the third largest free-span indoor stadium in the world.
