The idea had long been on the BJP agenda, and the NDA's emphatic 353-seat majority in the 2019 Lok Sabha election gave it the political ballast it needed.

On August 5, 2019, 70 years after it was first inserted via presidential decree, Article 370 was revoked by the government, followed by the bifurcation of the state into Union territories, controlled directly by the Centre. The constitutional provision had bestowed special status on Kashmir, allowing it to have its own constitution, flag and full autonomy in internal administration, barring defence, foreign policy and communications.
