The Art of Andreas Scholl (HMX2904131.36) offers a welcome chance to dive into the back catalogue of one of today's leading countertenors. It was 30 years ago that Scholl first recorded for Harmonia Mundi, releasing an album of German Baroque songs that forms the first of six CDs included in this new set. An album of German Baroque cantatas nods to his home country, but Scholl also turns his attention to English repertoire, and the master of melancholy, John Dowland. Two albums dedicated to Handel, exploring famous arias and scenes, make this a wonderful celebration of Scholl's artistry.
