This might seem impossible for some trips but try to avoid travelling by plane if there's another option you can take, such as train, bus, car or even boat. Commercial airlines account for roughly 2.5 per cent of global greenhouse gas emissions and are one of the fastest-growing contributors. If flying is necessary for where you're off to, opt for nonstop (direct) flights as they use less carbon emissions compared to travelling on connecting flights. Qantas, Jetstar and Virgin Australia also have voluntary carbon offset schemes available for passengers looking to purchase offsets for their flights when booking.
