Playstation 5 'Slim' & Digital Edition: STILL A GREAT CONSOLE BUT NOT THE PS5 UPGRADE YOU'RE LOOKING FOR
January 2024

Starting from the very first PlayStation One, I've come to appreciate Sony's penchant for revamping their consoles. The charm of these slimmed-down versions has always struck a chord with me.
-
The original PS5, with its white-and-black monolith design, was a behemoth whether it's sitting on your TV console or gaming desk.
It had a presence that one tolerated rather than truly embraced. So, the idea of Sony giving the PS5 a much-needed aesthetic overhaul seemed like an obvious win.
However, the result is a series of what I thought were halfhearted changes that feel more like missed opportunities.
Let's talk size. Sony claims the new PS5 is over 30% smaller in volume. At first glance, this seems impressive, but the reality is a bit more nuanced. The console's size still leaves an imposing footprint.
Its swooping curves and contours left me constantly changing my opinion of the design, depending on the angle I'm looking at it from (I decided that it looks best for me when laying it horizontally and at an angle where I can see more of either side). Beauty is in the eye of the beholder, of course, but I thought the design is busy, bordering on fussy, and frankly, lacking the simplicity from past PlayStation Slim models - such as the really good-looking PS2 Slim and PS4 Slim.
The slim version does improve on its predecessor's aesthetics with shorter white covers and a more defined top curve.

SO SMALL, SO CUTE. HAIYOOO...
As giant triple-slot GPUs dominate the market, Gigabyte's RTX 5060 OC Low Profile stands out as a rare compact option that delivers full-sized performance. It fits small-form-factor builds, matches larger cards in most games, and sips power - with higher thermals the only real trade-off.

SMALL WRIST, BIG DISPLAY
In my previous review of the Pixel Watch 3, I expounded on why 45mm was the perfect size for Google's smartwatch. Naturally, when the Pixel Watch 4 was announced, Google sent me the 41mm version instead. And guess what? I've grown to love it.

A RETURN TO FORM
After the catastrophe of Battlefield 2042, expectations for EA and DICE's next entry couldn't have been lower. But Battlefield 6 is a grounded, stable, and gloriously chaotic return to form that reminds players why they fell in love with the series in the first place.

CHAOS, BUT FINALLY FUN AGAIN
Borderlands 4 shouldn't have won me over-but it did. Gearbox's latest entry dials back the noise, sharpens the chaos, and rekindles the fun at the series' core, delivering a leaner, faster, surprisingly addictive return to form.

STILL GREAT, BUT SMALL UPGRADES
Apple's new Watch lineup – the Ultra 3, Series 11, and SE 3 – looks exciting at first glance, but most of the upgrades are incremental. For recent owners, it's a year of refinement rather than reinvention.
