Winner of 2025's Wainwright Prize for Raising Hare, Chloe Dalton says caring for the leveret changed her life

- Chloe Dalton

THE FREEDOM OF ANIMALS

Did you have much experience with pets or taking care of animals before you found the newborn hare?

I had very little direct experience outside childhood. My father is a diplomat so I grew up abroad. Moving around so much meant I couldn't have the dog I craved as a child. But I did have a white mouse named Napoleon and, for a while, an English spot rabbit, until he burrowed his way out of his run. But, for all my adult life I lived in the city, travelling almost constantly for my work. Pets - and animals in general - were not on my horizon at all.

When you found the newborn leveret, how did you learn to take care of it?
