'Free meals' for predators boost capercaillie breeding success in the Cairngorms National Park
What a time to be alive... if you're a capercaillie! The average brood size of this rare bird has more than doubled in parts of Scotland, a paper in Proceedings of the Royal Society B reveals- thanks to a gentle anti-predator management scheme.
Typically weighing a little more than the average building brick, the capercaillie is the world's largest grouse species. Males are known for their large fan tails and for their leks - spots where they gather to show off to impress females.
