Carolina CHARM
Winter 2026
|Old House Journal
Traditional details and enthusiastic collections, well curated, lend interest and personality to a beachside retreat damaged by a hurricane and reimagined by architect J. E. Schram.
AFTER HURRICANE FLORENCE destroyed their summer home on Bald Head Island, in 2018, the owners decided to dig in and revive the structure.
An interior design friend recommended they lean on the expertise of an architect to achieve an elevated, cohesive result.
Specifically, this friend recommended J. Everett Schram, principal of J. E. Schram Architect. Serendipitously, the owners already were following him on Instagram and they loved his work.
They hired the Baltimore-based architect and embarked on a new journey in the same spot they loved visiting so much.Bald Head is a barrier island off the coast of North Carolina, at the mouth of Cape Fear River. Reachable only by boat or ferry, it is a place where bikes and golf carts roam and natural beauty abounds.
