Subodh Gupta's art journeys home, blending everyday objects and cultural reflections with profound meaning

renewed roots

Identity lies at the heart of creative expression, often shaping the stories artists choose to tell. For creatives, it's not a static concept but an ever-evolving narrative, informed by their roots, experiences, and aspirations. Subodh Gupta's latest exhibition, 'The Way Home', exemplifies this journey. Returning to his birthplace of Bihar for his first museum solo in the region, Subodh embarks on a poignant exploration of his identity, delving into the essence of home and belonging.

This homecoming is a profoundly meaningful journey for the artist, marking his return to where his creative story began — in the railway town of Khagaul. “Exhibiting in Patna feels deeply personal and special for me,” says Subodh. “The audience and I speak the same language because we are connected spiritually, emotionally, and locally.” The works on display include everyday objects — milk pails, tiffin boxes, and kitchen utensils — that transcend their utilitarian purpose, becoming vessels of memory, identity, and transformation.
