Our columnist Joy Moyler defines antiques as the key to unique interiors and tells us how to source them

Joy is a US-based designer but her work takes her all over the world. Now running her own studio – Joy Moyler Interiors – she has over 25 years of experience and a degree in architecture. She is celebrated for her use of colour and pattern.

Some people fear any furniture more than five years old. Not me – as a matter of fact, there’s a running joke with my sister who always says, ‘Joy, you don’t want anything unless a 100-year-old had it first’. Sometimes, I think I was born of another age. I’ve always loved set designs in older films, especially those with Fred Astaire, Ginger Rogers, Bette Davis and the like. Everyone around me knows how much I adore the original black and white film Rebecca. It’s loaded with antiques, yet there is a contemporary edge to it as well. That's where I fell in love with the mix.
