Cubby Storage Shelves
June - July 2025
|Family Handyman
This versatile unit adds easy organization—and a little personality—to any room in the house

Whether you need extra storage in your kid’s bedroom closet, a bathroom or an entryway, a cube cubby storage system is a simple, attractive solution. I added rattan to the back for a natural touch with a boho feel, and for a pop of color, I chose Sherwin-Williams’s Inverness. Take inspiration from your own space and style to make this build uniquely yours.
1 CUT THE WOOD AND LAY OUT THE RATTAN
Following the cut list, cut the wood pieces and trim using a miter saw. At the home center, be sure to select straight lumber that’s free of large knots and cracks in crucial locations.
The rattan needs to cover an area at least 26½ in. by 38½ in., which means you may have to purchase two pieces of rattan and cut them to fit each side of the cubby. If working with two pieces, you’ll need the seam to align so you can hide it behind a shelf or divider.
2 LAY OUT THE LEGS
Use double-sided carpet tape to adhere both sides (B) together so they can be cut at the same time. You can draw the leg shape (see Figure B) directly onto the wood, or draw it on paper and then transfer it.

Clamp the sides (B) to a table and use a jigsaw to cut the legs. TIP: Cut slightly outside the line so that when it’s time to sand, you'll know where to stop. This will help keep the legs uniform.
Use an orbital sander and drill sanding drum to smooth the edges. If you don’t have a sand- ing drum, a sanding block works just as well. Check both sides to make sure they’re smooth.
