Challenge convention and trade an unassuming white-painted ceiling for one that packs a decorative punch

1 GET IN LINE

Stripes have space-defying powers: place them parallel to the ceiling’s longest side to exaggerate a room’s length or go with the width to make a small room feel larger. For those less confident with statement interiors, stripes can feel very bold. ‘The trick is to use colours already seen in the room, so it feels intentional,’ says interior designer Sean Symington. ‘Also, be mindful of width: too thin can feel fussy, too thick can overwhelm.’ To test the scale before committing to paint, mark the stripes with a pencil or masking tape. ‘When done right, it can transform the feel of a space, create depth and add a playful, unexpected twist,’ adds Sean.
