Publicly banished
Queen Elizabeth II v Fergie
Sarah Ferguson married Prince Andrew in 1986, quickly becoming a favourite of the Queen, thanks to her love of horses and sense of humour. However, with Andrew away on naval duty, the marriage disintegrated. Five months after their separation in March 1992, photos of Fergie’s ‘financial adviser’ John Bryan sucking her toes and kissing her while on holiday were splashed all over the papers.
On the morning the compromising pictures were published, Fergie was at Balmoral. A ‘furious’ Queen ordered her to leave immediately. She left by a side entrance, driving herself, daughters Beatrice and Eugenie and their nanny to Aberdeen airport.
In 1996, the Queen reportedly asked what Sarah wanted in her divorce settlement, she replied, ‘Your friendship.’ They did eventually become close again and after the Queen’s death, Fergie – and Andrew – adopted her beloved corgis, Sandy and Muick.
