Boost your diet this summer with new dishes and clever swaps

Stay healthy on HOLIDAY

With super-healthy salads, a vast array of in-season fruit and cool refreshing drinks, it can be easy to relax about your food choices in the warm weather, can’t it? But holiday cuisine can be just as calorific, fatty and sugar-laden as the stodgy winter favourites at home.

Get back on track with our healthy eating guide - discover the foods to steer clear of and the exciting new world dishes you should add to your diet, and enjoy the very best of summer dining.

Smart choices

Registered dietician Nigel Denby gives us the lowdown on how to eat healthily this summer.

Salad dressing

Swamping veggies in oil ruins what could be a really filling and delicious bowl of goodness. Everyone loves a tasty dressing, and you don’t have to go without – just adapt it to make it kinder to your waistline. Opt for balsamic vinegar (not glaze), which adds flavour for roughly 12 calories per tablespoon or, if you prefer something creamy, try home-made flavoured yogurt dressing tzatziki. Stir cucumber chunks into fresh 0% fat yogurt with lemon juice and crushed garlic.

Ice cream

Ice cream-based treats will pile on the fat and calories before you’ve touched the sauce, chocolate or nuts. Ice cream is about 300 calories a scoop, whereas fat-free frozen yogurt is around 90 calories. For a creamier alternative, try 0% fat Greek yogurt, which is 130 calories. A fruit sorbet is slightly higher at 180 calories - and contains sugar - but it’s still better for you than ice cream. Try refreshing flavours, such as elderflower, coconut or lychee.

MIRROR, MIRROR...

Not feeling your best? Even if you think you eat well, you might be falling short of all the vitamins and minerals you need. Deficiencies are linked to increased risk of dementia, depression, heart disease, type 2 diabetes and obesity. The good news? 'It can take anywhere from a few weeks to a few months for deficiencies to show, but tuning in to your appearance can help you to identify when something is wrong,' says nutritionist Jenna Hope. Here's how to interpret the telltale visual clues...
