From Ozempic to Wegovy, everyone is talking about weight-loss jabs. In fact, one in five* Brits admit they'd use the injections if they were free on the NHS. But how do they really work, and are there healthier slimming options out there?

These weight-loss jabs mimic GLP-1 (glucagon-like peptide-1), a hormone in our bodies. It occurs naturally in our gut, where it plays an important role in regulating appetite and maintaining blood sugar levels. Normally, the hormone is released after we eat, triggering insulin production, slowing down digestion and making us feel fuller for longer.
While these injections can be effective for short-term weight loss and blood glucose level control, they often have side effects, like nausea, vomiting and headaches, and can be expensive. 'More importantly, they don’t address the root causes of weight gain or poor metabolic health,' says Ulrike Kuehl, head of nutrition at Lumen**.
However, with some simple diet and lifestyle changes, you can increase your GLP-1 levels naturally.
