Buransh The miracle flower

Buransh is a flowering plant commonly found here. It is the state flower of Uttarakhand and the state tree of Sikkim. It is the national flower of Nepal too.

Buransh, botanical name Rhododendron arboreum is native to the Himalayan region. Buransh is a shrub or a small tree found in higher altitude regions 2000-4000 meters with temperate climates and alpine conditions. Vibrant red and sometimes pink bell-shaped flowers that bloom in clusters is its unique feature. White variety is also seen but is considered to be poisonous. The villagers consider blooming of Buransh as synonymous with arrival of spring. Just as similar to cherry blossoms in japan the Hindu Kush Himalayan region, Buransh is viewed as a cultural and culinary celebration.

The flowers are used by traditional healers. The localities have been incorporating Buransh flowers for making juice, jam, jelly, squash, tea, and chutney especially during the transition from winter to spring. The juice is given as a drink in the morning along with breakfast. It is said to possess potent antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, antimicrobial and anti-diabetic properties. Apart from the above uses Buransh has caught the attention of scientists for their ecological significance. The delayed blooming of these flowers serves as a prime indicator of environmental change.
