‘We all recognise the benefits of being outdoors, but how do we make sure that gardens are accessible to everyone, including those with specific mobility needs?’
From initial design concept to the maintenance and selection of plants, what can gardeners and garden designers do to create spaces that are welcoming, inclusive and accessible to all - whatever the age, background or ability? It’s a question that’s come up a lot during my gardening career, first as Head Gardener for Horatio’s Garden – the national charity that creates outdoor spaces for NHS spinal injury centres in the UK -and more recently designing health-related gardens for BBC One's DIY SOS.
According to government statistics, there are over 16 million people with a disability in the UK (24 per cent of the population), including 48 per cent with additional mobility needs, 1.2 million people who use a wheelchair (two thirds of which are regular users and one third who can walk, stand or move independently sometimes) and 2 million people who are blind. Studies also show that time ina garden can do wonders for our wellbeing and this can be especially important for those who need physical recuperation or a mental health boost. So, access for all, where possible, is crucial.
