WHAT DISTINGUISHES HER WORK: “My DIY approach to making music — I write, record, produce, mix and master all my music from home. It started out this way due to necessity, as I'm not formally trained and I wanted to learn to do things myself, but it has since become my modus operandi. I love how it means that I’m learning all the time, and it's a way for me to push boundaries. It has also translated to the visuals of my videos, which tend to be raw and have an intentional ‘low budget’ quality, as I record them on a camcorder. I never set out to represent myself this way, but it’s something that I’ve made work for me and feels authentic to me.”

imageTHE MOST IMPORTANT THING SHE'S WORKING ON NOW: “I’m finishing my next album, which I had originally intended to launch last year, but I was going through a bit of a slump then, so I took a break and started fresh, and I’m happy I did that because it’s coming together better now ... It focuses on the things and people that matter in this lifetime, no matter the struggles and distractions we face.”

CURRENT CULTURAL OBSESSION: “I'm a sucker for all things cute and I’ve been obsessed with the anime adaptation of Chiikawa since last year.”

imageCELEBRITY CRUSH: “Nana Komatsu is my forever crush. Also, Anya Taylor-Joy and Sophie Thatcher.”

WHAT MAKES HER CRUSH ON SOMEONE: “I think it’s attractive when someone is cool but completely unaware that he or she is cool. I also have a soft spot for shy types with a good sense of humour, and find it cute when people geek out about things that excite them.”

SOMETHING SHE'D SAY TO A FORMER CRUSH: “Who?”

WARNING: CONTAINS GRAPHIC CONTENT

Besides bringing in some of the best movies from around the globe (nearly every one is “Certified Fresh” on Rotten Tomatoes), homegrown independent film distributor Anticipate Pictures is known for its hyper-stylish, often-cheeky scroll-stopping artworks promoting said flicks — after all, the company was founded in 2016, when Instagram was starting to seriously blow up.

CINEMA PARADISO

The house of Chanel has been a committed champion of the film world since founder Gabrielle Chanel started dressing the actresses from the United Artists studio at the request of American producer Samuel Goldwyn in the 1930s. Besides styling stars on screen and off, the brand has been an active supporter of international movie festivals, institutions and directors (local auteur Eric Khoo was one of them); has helped to restore classics such as the enigmatic Last Year at Marienbad (1961); and often draws inspiration from cinema. For Cruise 2025/26, it pays homage to the glamour of the silver screen as well as Coco Chanel's decades-spanning friendship with legendary Italian filmmaker Luchino Visconti. Here's an exclusive closeup look at the collection and the many ways it's coded la dolce vita.

CALLING THE SHORTS

The power of a short film goes beyond its ability to pander to shrinking attention spans. As Thong Kay Wee, the programme director of the Singapore International Film Festival, explains, \"the format is often more inclusive because of its lower production cost, giving space for niche stories and creative freedom to exist\", adding that \"historically, short films have always been an integral feature of local cinema\".

PORTRAITS OF LADIES ON FIRE

Launched in 2011, Miu Miu Women’s Tales is the longest-running platform supporting the creation of short films by women and about women – or, more specifically, femininity and its relationship with vanity. Its latest commission is helmed by the incisive French filmmaker Alice Diop, whose short Fragments for Venus is a powerful reclamation of identity pertinent to the times.

DAYS OF BEING WILD

It began life as the Golden Theatre - Singapore's largest cinema when it opened in 1973 – and was transformed 11 years ago by Karen Tan, Sharon Tan and Blaise Trigg-Smith into The Projector. A bold, indie institution residing in Golden Mile Tower, it challenged the rules of movie-going and became the beating heart of the city's alternative film scene. To survive though, The Projector had to be more than just a cinema - and so it evolved into a space for creative risk-taking, subculture and community. Living up to its tag line, \"Not Your Average Cinema\", it rewrote what a film venue could be. Three months on from its unexpected closure this August, co-founder Karen reflects on more than a decade of cinematic rebellion, cultural experimentation and what it meant to build - and lose - a space like no other.

XTRA CULTURAL ACTIVITIES

Welcome to a new golden era of oddly specific hobbies. Want to make a book by hand? Have your most personal memories etched into a record? Or how about dressing like a 14th-century elf at a fantasy-inspired fair? These days, chances are that there's someone else who's just as into such activities as you are - and there are more avenues than ever here to find your people, fuelled by a craving for connection and a creative escape in a too-fast digital world.
