ELLE: Why do you think that people are so drawn to spy thrillers like The Night Manager?
TOM HIDDLESTON: John le Carré, on whose book the show is based, is the architect of our understanding of espionage and what he called “the secret world,” in which there are these notions of trust and identity—spies have to become intimate with their enemies to extract information, only to betray them. And that is a dance of seduction and betrayal that many of us simply couldn’t do.
ELLE: Your costar Olivia Coleman is such a badass. What have you learned from her?
