Before a snowstorm rolled through Pennsylvania on Jan. 26, 2011, Sandee Greenberg and her daughter Ellen, 27, spoke by phone, just like they did every morning. Sandee chatted while putting on her makeup at her home in Harrisburg, Pa., while Ellen, a first grade teacher at Philadelphia’s Juniata Park Academy, talked about preparing her taxes. “Everything seemed fine,” recalls Sandee, 69. “She was going to take on the day.”

Hours later, though, the Greenbergs got the most heartbreaking news of their lives when the father of Ellen’s 28-year-old fiancé, Sam Goldberg, told them “something terrible had happened” to Ellen. Although Sam’s father had few details, Sandee and husband Josh, 75, a retired periodontist, learned later from police that Sam said he had returned from the gym of the couple’s building in the hip Manayunk neighborhood and found his dead fiancée slumped on the floor of their apartment with a 10-inch knife protruding from her chest.
