Meghan's Family Crisis Deepens as Estranged Father Faces Medical Emergency

Following her father’s emergency surgery on Dec. 3, Meghan, Duchess of Sussex, reached out with a quiet gesture—an email sent on Dec. 5—in a complicated relationship long marked by emotional distance.
Thomas Markle, 81, who moved to the Philippines earlier this year with his son Thomas Markle Jr., underwent an emergency leg amputation on Dec. 3, reportedly after a blood clot cut off circulation in his left leg. Thomas Jr. said his father remains in intensive care, with doctors describing the days immediately after surgery as critical.
Thomas has faced prior health issues, including a reported stroke in 2022. A spokesperson for Meghan, 44, confirmed that she had “reached out” the same day she learned of her father’s health crisis, even as a report claimed he had not heard from her. Meghan has been estranged from her father since 2018, following his involvement in staging paparazzi photographs ahead of her wedding to Prince Harry.
