Why should a shoe made with handwoven textile be boring?” asks Anita Soundar, designer and founder – Disobedience, which – as you can glean from the name – is an off-kilter shoe brand subverting the rules of shoe-making. Its USP is the heel of each of its designs, made in oddly intriguing shapes with reclaimed teak and sheesham wood, and even stainless steel. A tableau of boots, ballerina flats, loafers, and pumps – made using plant-based leather and handwoven jute, kala cotton, and eri silk – make up its SKUs, asserting that shoes made with handwoven textiles – in the case of Disobedience at least – are both interesting and wearable.
