GENDER INEQUALITY STATS (STATS SA)

• Women earn, on average, 30% less than men. .36.8% of all women in SA are unemployed. • One in five SA women experience abuse.

Look over your shoulder as you walk home. Avoid going out at night. Travel in groups. Remember to share your location. Take pepper spray and a taser. Be polite, but not too polite... Smile at them, but not too much. From these untold rules to many more, South African women are always on guard, living in an overwhelming state of fear for their safety.

Gender-based violence (GBV) and femicide are widespread problems in South Africa, with a 2021 Statistics South Africa report, 'Crimes Against Women in South Africa', revealing that one in five women (about 21%) experience physical violence from their partners. And according to SaferSpaces, a South African violence prevention platform, up to 40% of South African women have actually experienced sexual or physical intimate partner violence. In comparison, just under 50% have experienced emotional or economic abuse by their partners in their lifetime.
