Best of British

Brian Howes unearths some nostalgic collectables that might be discarded as worthless junk but actually have a value to today's collectors. Can you estimate what each object might be worth and pick out which one is the big-money item? The values are printed on page 80.

TREASURES In the ATTIC

1 Good old Woolies

Christmas seems to begin far too early these days with many shops starting to sell Christmas merchandise in October. Wrapping presents has always been one the great joys of Christmas and a trip to FW Woolworth was where we always went for our paper and tinsel cord. These colourful cards look just like the ones we bought from good old Woolies.

image2 Fairground attraction

Fairgrounds have always been great places to show off your darts skills, and I once fondly remember taking home a goldfish from our local wakes, which happily lived to a ripe old age. This hand-painted darts stall sign dates from the 1960s and clearly shows the lettering skills of the old fairground signwriters.

image3 Memories of Mum

Dating from the 1970s, this lovely coffee pot is part of a fully complete coffee set made by Royal Worcester. I still use it most days as it belonged to my dearly loved and much-missed mother and is something I will never part with. It was designed as part of the popular Palissy range and the pretty floral pattern was called Honeysuckle.
