IN 2019, Google researchers claimed to have built a machine capable of performing tasks that were not possible with traditional supercomputers. The designation of this machine as a 'quantum computer' was controversial, particularly as supercomputers became more powerful than Google's creation.

Now, the ball is back in Google's court.

The company claims its 'Willow' computer chip took less than five minutes to perform a mathematical calculation that one of the world's most powerful supercomputers couldn't complete in 10 septillion years.
