Understanding the Recent Surge in Climate Disasters: A Management Perspective

In recent years, the world has witnessed a disturbing increase in climate-related disasters, including landslides, floods, hurricanes, tsunamis, and heat waves. These phenomena underscore the urgent need for comprehensive climate risk management and proactive adaptation strategies. By examining the underlying causes through a management lens, we can better understand the drivers of these disasters and develop more effective strategies to mitigate their impact.

Risk Factors and Environmental Management

The frequency and intensity of climate disasters are largely attributed to anthropogenic factors that disrupt environmental equilibrium. Unsustainable development practices and poor environmental management have exacerbated vulnerabilities to natural hazards. Deforestation, for instance, removes vegetation that stabilises soil, increasing susceptibility to landslides. Similarly, inadequate water resource management can lead to both droughts and floods, disrupting ecosystems and human settlements alike.

imageStrategic Misalignment and Urban Planning

Urbanisation, when executed without strategic foresight, contributes significantly to the spate of climate disasters. Rapid urban sprawl encroaches upon floodplains and increases surface runoff, greatly enhancing flood risks. Poorly designed infrastructure that fails to accommodate natural water flow increases urban vulnerability. Furthermore, the construction of impervious surfaces restricts groundwater recharge, intensifying the effects of heat waves in urban heat islands. An over-reliance on outdated urban planning models that do not integrate climate resilience is a critical mismanagement issue.
