U.S. LNG Exports Surge Amid Rising Global Demand and Geopolitical Shifts
March 2025
|Offshore Africa
By Our Reporter The United States has experienced a remarkable surge in liquefied natural gas (LNG) exports over the past decade, transforming from a net importer to the world's leading LNG exporter.
-
This growth has been driven by a combination of technological advancements, abundant natural gas reserves, strategic geopolitical shifts, and supportive governmental policies.
Technological Advancements and Resource Abundance
The U.S. energy landscape underwent a significant transformation with the advent of the shale revolution in the late 2000s. Innovations in hydraulic fracturing and horizontal drilling unlocked vast reserves of natural gas previously deemed uneconomical. This technological breakthrough led to a near doubling of U.S. natural gas production over the past 15 years, reaching approximately 102.2 billion cubic feet per day (Bef/d) by 2024. Consequently, natural gas prices have remained relatively low, providing a competitive edge for U.S. LNG in global markets.
Expansion of LNG Export Infrastructure
Capitalizing on its abundant natural gas supply, the U.S. rapidly developed LNG export infrastructure. Facilities initially constructed as import terminals were repurposed for exports, and new liquefaction projects were commissioned. As of early 2025, the U.S. boasts an operational LNG export capacity of approximately 13.8 Bcf/d, with an additional 11.2 Bcf/d under construction. This expansion positions the U.S. to meet the growing global demand for LNG, which is projected to increase by over 60% through 2040.
