Machining Evolution

The evolution of machining and tooling strategies is essential for the manufacturing sector to cater to the ever-growing demands of the market. Especially in the B2B manufacturing sector, time is a critical factor. Achieving the shortest processes with superior quality and production efficiency is essential.

Obaiah O, Manager & Unit Head, Government Tool Room & Training Centre, says, “Advanced machines such as EDM, CNC, and full tool room facilities are widely used in various industries to meet Industry 4.0 norms.”

Gautam K Ahuja, CEO & Managing Director, Guhring India Pvt Ltd, shares some of the latest machining and tooling strategies. He says, “Advanced tooling and machining enable the creation of auto parts with intricate geometries, opening new possibilities for design innovation and optimisation. Super hard tool materials like Poly Crystalline Diamond (PCD) offer quality components at faster feed rates with longer tool life, boosting productivity. High-performance tooling shortens production cycles and lead times, accelerating development and market entry. Existing machinery can be optimised through high-performance tooling and strategies, reducing the need for new investments. While initial investment in advanced machining may be significant, long-term cost savings are notable due to efficient material use, lower scrap rates, and automation. Advanced techniques also enable the use of high-performance materials like alloys, composites, and advanced polymers, enhancing durability, strength, and vehicle performance and safety.
