DEFENCE DRONES: REDEFINING MILITARY LOGISTICS
September 2025
|Logistics & SCM
Defence drones, projected to reach USD 22.8 billion by 2030, are moving beyond surveillance and combat to become a backbone of military logistics
In the rapidly evolving landscape of modern warfare, defence drones are no longer confined to surveillance and combat roles; they are fundamentally transforming military logistics. These unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) enable the swift, secure, and efficient delivery of supplies in high-risk environments, minimising human exposure to danger while enhancing operational agility.
As global conflicts intensify—from the ongoing tensions in Ukraine to border disputes in the Himalayas—drones are proving indispensable for overcoming logistical hurdles in contested terrains. India, the fourth largest economy in the world, is also making significant strides in defence drone logistics. Over the next five years, the country has set a focus on overcoming challenges, shaping supportive policies, and scaling technology to strengthen its military supply chains through drone-based solutions. That said, challenges persist.
EVOLVING ROLE OF DRONES IN MILITARY SUPPLY CHAINSDefence drone logistics represents a paradigm shift from traditional ground-based convoys, which are often vulnerable to ambushes, terrain obstacles, and supply disruptions. Drones facilitate “last-mile” deliveries, transporting ammunition, medical kits, food rations, and equipment to remote or forward-operating bases with precision and speed.
This capability is particularly vital in asymmetric warfare, where rapid resupply can determine mission success. In high-altitude regions like the Himalayas, where road access is limited by snow and rugged landscapes, drones mitigate the risks associated with animal transport or manned helicopters.
