Rugby, Resistance and Politics by Buntu Siwisa Jacana, R280)
It is nearly half a century since Daniel Cheeky’ Watson threw in a promising provincial rugby career to follow his conscience and leave apartheid’s all-white teams to play and coach black teams in the Eastern Cape.
A decade ago, Watson was awarded the Order of Ikhamanga in silver for his resistance to apartheid in sport and in underground politics. Until recently, Watson and his brothers, who followed his lead into township rugby, tended to dominate the narrative of a journey that has ultimately led to the emergence of a fresh generation of talent, including Siya Kolisi.
Siwisa’s research maps the journey in a much broader and more fully inhabited context. At the heart of it is Dan Qege, a sports administrator and political activist whose name is familiar for a stadium in Zwide, Ggeberha.
An absorbing reassessment and a trove of new and important detail and insights.
