Riding in Alaska: bracing tours on the gold-rush trail

All my horses were shivering when I went to my farm this week. The wind was icy, and the animals hadn't yet grown their winter coats. Checked the horse blankets...some of them needed repairing but most were OK. My goodness, I thought, it feels like being in Alaska.

Well, of course, while we are shivering here, Alaska is fairly warm - it's way up north, where it is summertime right now.

There are some great horse trails in Skagway, located at the northern end of the Lynn Canal in south-east Alaska. The name Skagway means 'the place where the north wind blows'.

Alaska is the largest peninsula in the US. It includes the Aleutian Islands and lies to the east of Canada and British Columbia. The indigenous population lived in comparative isolation until gold was discovered there in about 1890.

The Klondike gold fields and the Klondike Gold Rush National Historical Park are now tourist attractions that can be explored on horseback.
