Hempseed cake is not only a good substitute for soya bean meal as a source of protein in goats' diets, but also significantly improves the health qualities and flavour of goats' meat.
This was according to research by the Department of Animal Sciences at Stellenbosch University and the Department of Veterinary Tropical Diseases at the University of Pretoria.
Dr Farouk Semwogerere, a postdoctoral fellow in the Department of Animal Sciences at Stellenbosch University, told Farmer's Weekly that the researchers had conducted this study because of the "ever-increasing cost of soya bean meal, which is driven up internationally by the evergrowing food-feed-fuel demand for soya bean".
