Game-changing technology for small-scale farmers
July 28, 2023
|Farmer's Weekly
Digital farming technology has come a long way, and costs have dropped. Janine Ryan looks at drones and mobile apps that can help Africa's emerging farmers improve their production at an affordable price.

Farm technology is usually associated with high-cost high-tech equipment. However, as we discuss in this article, there are farm technologies available that are largely affordable, even for smallholder farmers.
DRONES
Drones can be a valuable tool for smallscale farmers looking to improve their production. Here are some ways that small-scale farmers can use drones:
• Crop monitoring
Drones equipped with sensors can be used to monitor crop health and growth, enabling farmers to identify issues such as pests, diseases, and nutrient deficiencies early on. This can help farmers take corrective action and improve yields.
FAST FACTS
Drones are available for agricultural production, and allow farmers the ability to quickly and actively scout their crops.
Various mobile apps can help small-scale farmers manage production and their finances.
The adoption of some of these technologies may see production on-farm improve.
• Soil analysis
Drones can be used to gather data about soil conditions, such as moisture levels, nutrient content, and pH. This information can help farmers make more informed decisions about fertilisers, irrigation, and other farming practices.
• Crop mapping
Drones can be used to create detailed maps of farmland, allowing farmers to identify areas that may require more attention or fertilisation. This can help them to optimise their use of resources and improve yields.
• Pest control
