Digital tools widen livestock auction participation
July 3-10, 2026

Digital tools and online bidding are widening South Africa's livestock auction rings, complementing physical sales by expanding geographic reach, driving multi-million rand turnovers, and providing buyers with data-driven confidence
Online bidding, digital marketing and better livestock information are becoming valuable additions to the auction system, helping auction houses, agents, sellers and buyers extend participation without replacing the value of live auctions.
Livestock auctions have always depended on trust. Buyers want confidence in the animals they are bidding on, the seller behind them, and the auctioneer or agent managing the sale. Sellers, in turn, want their livestock presented to a strong pool of serious buyers. Those principles have not changed. What has changed is the number of tools now available to support the auction process. Across South Africa’s livestock sector, online bidding platforms, digital catalogues, video content, social media marketing and buyer communication systems are becoming part of the broader auction environment. These tools are not replacing live auctions, auctioneers or livestock agents. Rather, they are adding another layer of reach and convenience to an established system.
For commercial producers, this can be valuable. A farmer may not always be able to travel to a sale, especially when auctions are held far from home or during busy production periods. Online bidding, pre-bidding and maximum-bid functions allow buyers to participate remotely, while still relying on the credibility of the auctioneer, the seller and the information supplied before the sale. The result is not an 'online versus live auction' debate. A more accurate description is that digital tools can widen the auction ring.
Russell Luck, CEO of SwiftVee, says online platforms are most useful when they support existing auction systems by allowing more buyers to participate.
