At AIIMS Guwahati, Creative Designer Architects (CDA) translates the language of care into architecture – creating a medical campus that is sustainable, adaptive, and deeply humane
-
The All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) Guwahati stands as a defining milestone in India's healthcare evolution – a bold step toward equitable, high-quality medical infrastructure in one of the country's most geographically and climatically challenging regions. As the first AIIMS to serve the entire northeastern belt, this 180-acre medical campus is more than just an institution; it is a statement of intent – to deliver care, education, and research that is deeply integrated with the region's ecology, culture, and community needs.
Conceived under the Government of India's Pradhan Mantri Swasthya Suraksha Yojana (PMSSY), the project by Creative Designer Architects (CDA) redefines the blueprint for healthcare environments in India. It is designed to be self-sustaining, resilient, and humane – a campus that nurtures both healing and learning.A campus shaped by nature
The design of AIIMS Guwahati draws heavily from the distinctive ecology of Assam, a land defined by its abundant rainfall, undulating terrain, and lush biodiversity. Here, nature isn't treated as a backdrop but as a central organizing principle. The master plan was guided by the dual imperative of managing water efficiently and preserving the fragile ecosystem.
Given Assam's high precipitation levels and frequent flooding, the design team prioritized an integrated approach to water management. A network of interconnected retention ponds and bioswales has been carefully embedded into the landscape to capture, filter, and store rainwater. These water bodies not only mitigate runoff and prevent waterlogging but also double as ecological habitats that support local flora and fauna, creating a campus that breathes with its surroundings.
