Why some fliers are complaining about changes to British Airways' loyalty program

- STORY BY ENRIQUE PERRELLA

Loyal Opposition

BRITISH AIRWAYS' (BA) overhaul of its loyalty program has sparked outrage among loyalists, forcing the airline to soften its stance. Initially, BA announced it would replace its mileage-based tier point system with a revenue-based model, increasing the spending required for elite status. But after intense criticism, concessions were made, including bonus tier points and a mileage-based shortcut to status. Effective April 1, BA's Executive Club will be rebranded as The British Airways Club, where travelers will earn one tier point per $1.25 spent, including airfare and baggage fees. Co-branded credit card spending will also count. The elite status point thresholds, however, have skyrocketed:

■ Bronze: 3,500 (from 300)

■ Silver: 7,500 (from 600)
