The Electric Vehicle Race: Can EVs Beat Hydrogen as the Future of Green Transportation?

March 2025

The race for green transportation is intensifying, with electric vehicles (EVs) and hydrogen fuel cell vehicles (HFCVs) emerging as the two leading contenders.

The Electric Vehicle Race: Can EVs Beat Hydrogen as the Future of Green Transportation?

While both technologies aim to reduce carbon emissions, EVs currently dominate the market due to their established infrastructure, lower operational costs, and improving battery technology.

EVs, powered by lithium-ion batteries, offer high efficiency and are rapidly advancing with innovations in solid-state batteries, faster charging, and increased range. The global charging network is expanding, making EV adoption more convenient for consumers. Additionally, lower maintenance costs and falling battery prices make EVs a more economical choice.

Hydrogen fuel cell vehicles, on the other hand, offer faster refueling times and longer ranges, making them ideal for heavy-duty transport and industries requiring continuous operation. However, hydrogen production remains energy-intensive, and the infrastructure for hydrogen refueling is still limited. Despite these challenges, advancements in green hydrogen production could make HFCVs more viable in the future.

While EVs currently lead the transition to sustainable mobility, hydrogen remains a potential solution for sectors where batteries face limitations. The future of green transportation may not be a winner-takes-all scenario but rather a coexistence where EVs dominate passenger vehicles while hydrogen finds its place in heavy transport and industrial applications. The deciding factor will be technological advancements and infrastructure development in the coming years.

Discussing the same issue, Abdullah partook in an in-depth dialog with a number of the industry’s acclaimed specialist, such as, Tushar Choudhary, Founder & CEO, Motovolt Mobility; Anshul Gupta, Managing Director, OPG Mobility.
