Cyient Steps into Semiconductor Industry with Strategic Focus on Innovation and Design

It provides innovative solutions across aerospace, defence, healthcare, telecommunications, rail transportation, and semiconductors. With a strong focus on design-led manufacturing, digital transformation, and intelligent solutions, Cyient helps clients to solve complex engineering challenges and improve operational efficiency. The company leverages cutting-edge technologies such as IoT, data analytics, and AI to drive sustainable growth with a global footprint and delivery centers across several continents.

Manas Nandi, the Editor-In-Chief of BIS Infotech and EV Mechanica, interacted with Krishna Bodanapu, Executive Vice Chairman & Managing Director, Cyient. The interview had questions ranging from semiconductor technology to the launch of Cyient's semiconductor subsidiary. Here is a glimpse of the interview.

Could you please brief us on the reason behind creating this new entity? What prompted you to establish it? Cyient has been in this business for a long time and is one of its pioneers—why create a separate entity altogether?

Cyient sees the opportunity within the semiconductor sector today in a very different and highly significant way. From a macro perspective, three key trends are shaping the current landscape.

Firstly, there is an increasing use of semiconductors across a wide range of industries. For instance, in the automotive sector, 25 years ago, a high-end car might have contained around 10 chips or semiconductors. Today, even a mid-range car features 300 to 400 semiconductors. And it's not just cars—household appliances, lighting systems, building materials—almost everything today incorporates chips. Secondly, due to current geopolitical dynamics, there is a global rebalancing underway concerning where semiconductor capabilities and capacities reside. India, among other countries, is placing greater emphasis on strengthening its position in this sector.

Beyond Fabs – Building the Infrastructure Backbone of India's Chip Ecosystem

India’s semiconductor mission has surged to national prominence in recent years, bolstered by multi-billion-dollar commitments aimed at establishing wafer fabrication (fab) units, compound semiconductor facilities, and chip assembly plants. While the nation rightly celebrates these historic announcements and the construction of state-of-the-art fabs, there remains a critical yet often overlooked pillar underpinning this ambition: the infrastructure and engineering services ecosystem.
