'Life-changing injury' for passenger left paralysed after sea safari ride

The danger of vertical impacts on rigid inflatable (RIB) boats "when inappropriate seating arrangements are used" has been highlighted by a report into the serious injury of a sightseeing passenger, who was left permanently paralysed.

The 28-year-old woman, of previous good health, suffered a fracture of her spinal column after Lundy Explorer struck a high wave while leaving Ilfracombe Harbour, North Devon, for an hour's wildlife tour of the coast on 7 June 2023. The force of the boat then slamming into an oncoming wave dislodged her from a jockey seat in the front of the 11m (36ft) RIB.
