Phil Sampson enjoys a light bite on the Jurassic Coast

I've long been intrigued by the Isle of Portland, the southernmost point of the Jurassic Coast.

Apart from the fact it's not actually an island at all (it's connected to the rest of Dorset by the southern end of Chesil Beach and a strip of blacktop known as the A354), I find it surprising there's anything of it left above sea level given how much of its eponymous stone has been quarried to give us edifices such as the Palace of Westminster and the Tower of London. But most of all, while I appreciate it's a great place to hang out until conditions allow for a quick inshore passage around the Bill, I'd never really thought of Portland as an obvious boating destination. Which makes me wonder what inspired anyone to put a 560-berth marina there.
