In a country of broad beaches, great food and a fantastic arts scene, Jo Davies takes on the challenge of driving a coachbuilt

SOUTH WALES

"Wow, it's quite... big, isn't it?" My friend and travelling companion, Albany, made this observation as we stood in the car park of Newport train station, taking in all 24ft of the motorhome. This thought had also crossed my mind after I arrived at our Reading office to pick up our long-term test loan, a Bailey Adamo 75-4DL.

As Practical Motorhome editor, Sarah, smiled encouragingly at me from the passenger seat, I tried not to betray my trepidation. It was a lot bigger than the campervans I'm used to and this would be my first tour in a larger coachbuilt. Nevertheless, Sarah and I had taken a few laps around the industrial park so I could get to grips with it.

imageThen all too soon, it was time for me to embark down the M4 towards Swansea and the gorgeous Gower Peninsula, famed for its many historical attractions and friendly locals. We decided to stop off halfway for a night at The Heritage Coast Campsite, where we were shown to a good grass pitch by the helpful staff. Along with the spacious pitch, they had facilities in converted stables, a café/bar and fine views across the countryside to the coast.

The following day, we left the site at 11am, having fuelled up with a coffee from the Plough and Harrow pub next door.

We then had a scenic, slightly hair-raising, drive to Rhossili Bay through the narrow country lanes.

imageA wave of relief washed over me as the National Trust car park came into view and we parked up in the overflow field.

We had booked lunch at The View, Rhossili, whose name gives a clue to its main attraction.

The charming little café, perched high above the bay, was bustling with locals, tourists and staff.
