There's something deeply instinctive about riding on dirt. No traction control, no electronic safety net, just throttle, balance, vision, and trust. That’s exactly what Royal Enfield’s Slide School, run in collaboration with Autologue Design at Autologue Ranch, strips riding down to.

I signed up expecting to learn how to slide a motorcycle. What I didn’t expect was to walk away with a recalibrated understanding of momentum, control, and confidence on and off the road.

Where Flat Track Began

Flat track racing traces its roots back to America in the early 20th century. In the 1920s and 1930s, oval dirt tracks were originally built for horse racing. As crowds grew and machines replaced horses, motorcycles found their natural playground on these simple, high-speed ovals.

The earliest tracks weren't even dirt, they were wooden board tracks. Fast, unforgiving, and notoriously slippery. Post World War II, with money scarce and practicality taking precedence, dirt ovals became the norm. What followed was a uniquely American motorsport where sliding wasn’t a mistake, it was the point.

Flat track motorcycles evolved accordingly: no front brakes, flat seats, wide handlebars, larger rear sprockets, and tyres designed to let go progressively. The goal was simple: pitch the bike sideways, control the slide, and carry momentum corner to corner.
